What Is the Cosmic-ray Luminosity of Our Galaxy?

چکیده

The total cosmic-ray luminosity of the Galaxy is an important constraint on models of cosmic-ray generation. The diffuse high energy γ-ray and radio-synchrotron emissions of the Milky Way are used to derive this luminosity. The result is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the standard estimate, based on the observed isotopic abundances of cosmic ray nuclides. We discuss the plausible interpretation of this discrepancy and the possible origin of such a relatively large luminosity.

The Eddington Limit in Cosmic Rays: an Explanation for the Observed Faintness of Starbursting Galaxies

We show that the luminosity of a star forming galaxy is capped by the production and subsequent expulsion of cosmic rays from its interstellar medium. By defining an Eddington luminosity in cosmic rays, we show that the star formation rate of a given galaxy is limited by its mass content and the cosmic ray mean free path. When the cosmic ray luminosity and pressure reaches a critical value as a...

Detailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays

In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...

Normal Galaxies in the Infrared

A normal galaxy is one that derives its luminosity primarily from nuclear burning in stars, and is at neither the high nor the low extreme of the luminosity distribution. In such galaxies, the visible and ultraviolet is the only direct window onto the photospheres of stars, whereas the rest of the spectrum reflects reprocessed light from stars (Figure 1). Dust in the interstellar medium reproce...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

Cosmological constraints from the local X - ray luminosity function of the most X - ray luminous galaxy clusters

We present precise constraints on the normalization of the power spectrum of mass fluctuations in the nearby universe, σ8, as a function of the mean local matter density, Ωm. Using the observed local X-ray luminosity function of galaxy clusters from the extended BCS and REFLEX studies, a mass-luminosity relation determined from Chandra and ROSAT X-ray data and weak gravitational lensing observa...
